The discussion inside Ukraine about the country’s democracy and the endemic corruption that has afflicted successive government administrations up to and including that of President Zelenskyy (elected in 2019), continues to regularly bubble to the surface. Despite all the promises over the years to root out corruption and end it, wealthy
oligarchs continue to fund all the country’s electoral parties and they demand favours and control in return.
Trade Unions, whose activities are currently curtailed by wartime restrictions, are an important component of the fightback due to their ability to organise within and beyond the workplace. Whilst most UK politicians are united in their support of Ukraine, few will be aware of its trade union movement and one of our tasks in USCS has always been to mobilise in their support. Whilst aid to help Ukraine survive and defeat the Russian invasion is paramount, their trade unions will need our support and constructive influence to win the post-war peace and struggle for democracy and justice for working people in the country.
