The Daily Record has today backed our call for new sanctions against British companies helping to finance Russia’s war in Ukraine by shipping Russian gas, including Glasgow-based Seapeak.
The Ukraine Solidarity Campaign Scotland (USCS), along with Ukrainian-led and environmental organisations, has spent months campaigning against Seapeak, including by staging a demonstration outside its HQ in July.
Seapeak is one of the world’s largest owner-operators of tankers and is transporting $4 billion worth of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Siberia to Belgium, France and Spain every year.
Today’s front-page story in the Daily Record sees USCS secretary Peter Cooper and Svitlana Romanko of Razom We Stand make the powerful case for new sanctions targeting companies like Seapeak.
The coverage follows an open letter co-ordinated by our friends in Razom We Stand which has so far been signed by more than 20 pro-Ukraine NGOs, as well as SNP and Labour MSPs.
The Daily Record itself backed the campaign in an editorial today, stating:
Russian ships are no longer allowed to enter UK ports but British firms can still help Putin transport his country’s gas around the world. One of these firms, Seapeak, is based in Glasgow. Seapeak’s actions are legal and do not break the sanctions but the firm is helping Putin in Ukraine by shipping gas.
That is why campaigners have united to demand the UK toughens its sanctions by closing this loophole. They do not believe British firms should be carrying Russia’s gas around the world and we agree.
Every effort must be made to stop Putin from generating the funds to continue his bombardment of Russia. Innocent civilians have died in this brutal war and gas sales are helping prolong the suffering. The Labour Government must step up and cut off the money supply.
