Stop Seapeak financing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

The Ukraine Solidarity Campaign Scotland will be protesting outside the HQ of giant LNG shipping multinational SEAPEAK tomorrow, Tuesday 23rd July, at 10am, 144 Elliot St, Glasgow G3 8EX.

Seapeak, a Glasgow-based shipping company and one of the world’s largest owner-operators of fossil fuel tankers, is transporting billions of dollars’ worth of Russian Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from Siberia to Belgium, France and Spain, in massive ice-breaking tankers such as the Yakov Gakkel.

Seapeak is helping to finance Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, a war which includes the illegal and murderous bombing of childrens’ hospitals.

Russian exports, including oil, have been subject to sanctions by the UK, the EU and the US since Putin’s genocidal and illegal full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Tens of thousands of people have been killed and millions more forced to flee their homes.

But Seapeak is helping finance that war, as revealed by a recent Sky News report The critical cog in Putin’s machine and how British firms help to keep Russian gas flowing into Europe – with UK government complicity.

The UK itself no longer imports Russian gas but 15% and rising of the EU’s gas is being imported from Russia, half of it by sea, and UK-based companies such as Seapeak and City of London insurers are profiting from its transport.

Russia is massively expanding its production of gas which causes global warming threatening human life on our planet. It’s a further environmental crime by Russia which is also committing deliberate acts of ecocide in Ukraine, including blowing up the Kakhovka dam and damaging nuclear power plants.

If the new Labour government is serious about sanctions on Russia, the transport and insurance of Russian LNG must be included in those sanctions.

Seapeak stop shipping Russian gas!

Stop funding Russia’s war! Real Sanctions now!

For a just peace in Ukraine – all Russian troops out of Ukraine now.

For a just and urgent transition to renewable energy sources.
