VICTORY for the Stop Seapeak Coalition

The UK government has finally announced that it will ban UK businesses from involvement in shipping Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG).

A spokesperson for the Stop Seapeak Coalition said:

“The UK government has for too long allowed UK businesses like Glasgow-based Seapeak to generate billions of dollars per year for Putin’s war machine through their role in the shipping of Russian liquefied natural gas to ports in Europe and around the world.

“We are delighted beyond words by the announcement that the UK will now finally turn off the tap and dry up this important source of income for the Russian regime.

“This is a massive victory for an international grassroots campaign which involved Ukrainian organisations like Razom We Stand and United Action, Scottish organisations like the Ukraine Solidarity Campaign Scotland and Climate Camp Scotland, Ukrainian student societies at Scottish universities, and rank-and-file trade unionists in both Ukraine and Scotland.

“We are grateful to all those who have, over the past two years, supported our demonstrations at Seapeak’s Glasgow headquarters and our petitions to the UK and Scottish parliaments.

“This triumph of international solidarity highlights how much more European governments can and must do to support Ukraine as the fourth anniversary of Russia’s all-out invasion rapidly approaches.

“We now need to see the UK government’s commitment become reality as quickly as possible.

“Too many people will die and too many villages and towns will come under Russian occupation by the time the UK government intends to fully implement this ban more than a year from now.

“We will continue to keep up the pressure on the UK government to better support Ukraine in its resistance to Russian fascism. We invite our supporters to join our webinar on 25th November to discuss how we build on the momentum of this week’s milestone achievement.”
